A stoneware Bellarmine jug 17th Century Circa 1660, Globular shape, applied opposite the handle with a bearded face mask, over an oval medallion enclosing a coat of arms of Amsterdam. Greybeards or bellarmines, according to Chambers' Book of Days 1863, were named after Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621) "during the religious feuds that raged in Holland during the sixteenth century. The protestant party originated a design for a drinkng jug, in ridicule of Cardinal Bellarmine who had been sent to oppose in person, and by his pen, the progress of the reformed religion".
