A Cypriot white painted ware jug, Cypro-Archaic, 750-475 BC
Decorated with an umber band of zig-zag around the neck, beneath the ground-down lip, the globular body with 'free-field' decoration of a stylised 'fir-tree' down the front and four tiny swastikas around the shouder, the strap handle with horizontal bands and a cross, with a large umber painted hook below. Swastikas were considered to be good luck symbols, representing sun, fire, or continuing creation, 18 cms
Condition - Good condition, minor wear, small chip below neck, intact. No restoration or repair.
Provenance: Part of a Cypriot private collection brought to the UK in 1951.
