Chinese porcelain export plate Qing dynasty Qianlong period (1736-1795) c 1745

A fine and rare export plate with grisaille decoration of the Resurrection of Christ, leaf and decorated with elaborate floral garland border, highlighted in gilt.
23 cms
Condition - excellent condition, very minor wear. No restoration or repair

The plate is finely painted en griaille with details heightened in gilt, the rim with a Viennese (Du Pacquier style) border enclosing a central depiction of a scene from the life of Christ; this example showing a scene of the Resurrection.
Plates and tea services depicting scenes from the life of Christ were popular in Europe between 1745-1750; this scene is taken from a print by the Amsterdam poet and engraver Jan Luyken (1649-1712),( the print created using pen and brown ink and brown wash, within pen and brown ink framing lines)
Related examples in museums and private collections are known.

Literature - a similar plate is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, 1978, Plate 312, p. 319
A superb example; would make a fine investment piece.

Chinese Kraak-style blue and white plate Qianlong period 1736-1795

Circular form painted with basket of flower design to the centre, surrounded by petal shape floral panel border in the Kraak style. It is said that the baskets were full of flowers and herbs to represent wealth and longevity, after one of the 8 Immortals, Lan Caihe, who was the patron saint of florists and whose distinguishing emblem is a flower basket. Kraak porcelain is named after the Portugese ship, 'Carracks', which transported porcelain from China to Europe between 1580 - 1640. However, Kraak style, meaning 'of similar decoration' to these earlier wares continued well into the 1700s. 21cms diameter
